Route planning for laundries

27.6 tonnes of CO2 saved at just one location - bardusch optimises with TransIT.

For over 150 years, bardusch has stood for professional textile management. With comprehensive and customised services for workwear, protective clothing, laundry for the catering, hotel and healthcare sectors, cleanroom textiles and washroom hygiene, the company ensures that over one million people across Europe are reliably supplied. In Germany alone, the company's own fleet of lorries now numbers over 400 vehicles, which transport around 310 tonnes of washed laundry every day. This makes bardusch one of the leading providers in the industry.

The challenge.

In addition to state-of-the-art logistics processes, route planning at bardusch was previously largely carried out manually. Although various software products from other providers were used sporadically, the optimisation potential remained largely untapped and the company's requirements were only partially met.

Andreas Domaser, Head of Distribution Logistics at bardusch, recalls: ‘I had the task of scrutinising route planning, taking all influencing factors into account.’

Through an initial contact, bardusch became aware of TransIT from gts - software that is specially tailored to the requirements of laundries. A demo appointment with bardusch's tour data was arranged.

The bardusch truck fleet comprises over 400 vehicles, which transport around 310 tonnes of washed laundry every day.

The solution: TransIT from gts.

The project started at the pilot site in Soltau - with a large delivery area and extensive routes. Right from the start, TransIT impressed with its ability to map the industry-specific features of laundries, especially for interval deliveries.

Andreas Domaser reports: ‘TransIT is a complex tool that can map the diverse requirements of our route planning almost completely. But the more complex it is, the better the results. We were supported from A to Z by Thomas Kriese, both during the implementation and during our first project.’

The results speak for themselves.

The results were impressive after just a short time:

  • On Monday alone, two tours were saved at the Soltau site.
  • Around 1,400 kilometres of driving were saved per week.
  • Extrapolated, this results in an annual saving of 72,800 kilometres and an impressive 27.6 tonnes of CO2.
  • Overnight trips could be abolished so that the production processes could be simplified enormously in this respect.

Outlook for the future.

Spurred on by its success, bardusch plans to introduce TransIT continuously at all locations.

Andreas Domaser summarises: ‘With TransIT, we have not only saved costs, but are also making an important contribution to sustainability. The tool is a real game changer for us.’
