Drones are no longer just transporting laboratory samples on a trial basis, but are now flying fixed routes.<\/strong><\/p><p>For us, as a provider of route planning software, this is an exciting field. The time between sample collection and analysis plays a key role in determining the quality of a diagnostic result. And it is precisely this time that our customers plan for every day. (AI-generated stock image)<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5e591548 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5e591548\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why drones at all?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-10a346ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"10a346ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Traditional courier services are reaching their limits: congested roads, long journeys in rural areas and a shortage of drivers. Hospitals are also under pressure in terms of costs and staffing, and are consolidating their laboratories at central locations. This means that the distances samples have to travel are getting longer, but the time slots are not.<\/p><p>This is precisely where drones really come into their own:<\/p><ul><li class=\"translation-block\">Speed: You\u2019re travelling as the crow flies and won\u2019t encounter any traffic jams. With Helios, the 32-kilometre journey from Breisach to M\u00fcllheim takes <a href=\"https:\/\/transport-online.de\/news\/drohnen-laborproben-gehen-die-luft-81664.html\" target=\"_self\">around 25 minutes.<\/a><\/li><li>Predictability: Transport can be arranged as and when required, rather than only at fixed collection times.<\/li><li>Sustainability: Electric drones replace individual car journeys and ease the burden on road traffic.<\/li><li>Widespread access to care: Smaller hospitals in particular, which do not have their own laboratories, benefit from faster test results.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2cd0eff3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2cd0eff3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">From a pilot project to everyday practice.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-29e5b1d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"29e5b1d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For years, it was limited to subsidised trials. Now, the first routes are operating regularly:<\/p><ul><li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nrwz.de\/aus-der-region\/zollernalb-klinikum-laborproben-kommen-bald-per-drohne\/491942?print=pdf\" target=\"_self\">Zollernalb Hospital<\/a> (Albstadt \u2013 Balingen): The German Federal Aviation Authority has, for the first time, authorised autonomous flights over a populated area here. The flight is controlled by a pilot in Berlin.<\/li><li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apotheken-umschau.de\/gesundheitspolitik\/drohne-als-medikamentenbote-welches-potential-fachleute-sehen-1424043.html\" target=\"_self\">Asklepios Clinics<\/a> (Selent \u2013 Bad Oldesloe): Samples are sent off daily. The car only runs in strong winds now.<\/li><li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/transport-online.de\/news\/drohnen-laborproben-gehen-die-luft-81664.html\" target=\"_self\">Helios Clinics<\/a> (Breisach \u2013 M\u00fcllheim): 32-kilometre route, up to 3 kg payload, around 75 km\/h.<\/li><li class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apotheken-umschau.de\/gesundheitspolitik\/drohne-als-medikamentenbote-welches-potential-fachleute-sehen-1424043.html\" target=\"_self\">Ingolstadt Hospital<\/a>: Regular flights between hospitals are planned from mid-2026.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"translation-block\">Nevertheless, the overall picture remains sobering. According to the DLR Test Centre, the use of drones in the healthcare sector is, on the whole, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aok.de\/pp\/gg\/versorgung\/drohnen\/\" target=\"_self\">not yet in regular operation<\/a>. However, the first economically viable models are emerging in the field of sample transport.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-21d5beb6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"21d5beb6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What the sample needs whilst in transit. <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72e57a27 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"72e57a27\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the end, only one thing matters: the sample must arrive at the laboratory exactly as it was collected. The same pre-analytical rules therefore apply during the flight as they do on the ground, albeit under different conditions.<\/p><ul><li>Packaging: Diagnostic samples are classified as \u2018Biological substance, Category B\u2019 (UN 3373). They are transported in the prescribed triple packaging in accordance with P650 \u2013 in the drone, usually in an additional, secured transport box.<\/li><li>Temperature: Many parameters can only be stored at room temperature. Insulated boxes and temperature loggers ensure that the cold chain is maintained even when transported by air.<\/li><li>Shock: Vibration and hard landings can, for example, contribute to haemolysis. Studies to date have found no significant differences compared with road transport, provided the goods are properly packaged.<\/li><li>Traceability: Take-off, landing and handover are recorded digitally. This ensures that every sample can be traced without any gaps.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-28d5232 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"28d5232\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What the problem still is.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ac62760 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ac62760\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Technology is more advanced than the framework conditions. Three factors are holding back its widespread adoption:<\/p><ul><li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Authorisation:<\/strong> Flights beyond visual line of sight and over residential areas require an operating licence from the Federal Aviation Authority, subject to a comprehensive risk assessment. Project managers speak openly of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niederlausitz-aktuell.de\/spree-neisse\/guben\/227933\/per-drohne-von-guben-nach-cottbus-ins-labor.html\" target=\"_self\">enormous bureaucratic burden<\/a>.<\/li><li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Weather:<\/strong> Even a light breeze or a little rain can be enough to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aok.de\/pp\/gg\/versorgung\/drohnen-im-gesundheitswesen\/\" target=\"_self\">prevent<\/a> the flight. A fallback glider on the ground is therefore compulsory.<\/li><li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Networking:<\/strong> At an altitude of 50 to 80 metres, drones frequently switch between mobile phone cells. This can make the connection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telekom.com\/de\/newsroom\/aktuelles\/news\/2026\/09\/drohnen-logistik-stabiles-iot-netz-fuer-kritische-transporte\" target=\"_self\">unstable<\/a> \u2013 a critical issue for reliable operation.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba75abf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ba75abf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">We are conducting research in collaboration with: SIDDA and AI4Drone. <\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dac1deb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dac1deb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is precisely where two research projects from North Rhine-Westphalia, in which we are involved, come in. Both will run until 2027; the consortium is led by Karl Koerschulte GmbH in L\u00fcdenscheid, with scientific support provided by, amongst others, the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>SIDDA \u2013 Sustainable Intermodal Drone Delivery Airline.<\/strong> The project is developing an automated drone network for time-critical deliveries. It connects fixed and mobile micro-hubs \u2013 small transhipment points \u2013 with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efre.nrw\/en\/node\/383\" target=\"_self\">automated drone airlines<\/a>. The aim is to integrate drones seamlessly into existing logistics chains rather than operating them as stand-alone solutions. One key component: weather data is <a href=\"https:\/\/transport-online.de\/news\/lieferdrohnen-forschungsprojekt-bindet-wetterdaten-mit-ein-179354.html\" target=\"_self\">automatically retrieved<\/a> and incorporated into flight planning.<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>AI4Drone.<\/strong> The focus here is on artificial intelligence. It calculates optimal routes and networks, taking into account <a href=\"https:\/\/nachrichten.idw-online.de\/sciencevideo\/207\" target=\"_self\">traffic, weather and delivery priorities in real time. <\/a> When it comes to laboratory samples, prioritisation is particularly interesting: an emergency sample should be flown faster than a routine sample.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-02fee42 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"02fee42\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Outlook.<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9db9d4b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9db9d4b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Drones won\u2019t replace transport services overnight. However, they will complement them in situations where time is short and the journey is long.
